چکیده

p harmacological modulation of the effects of advanced glycosylation end-products (AGEs) in pa tients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) can be approached using three major strategies: ( 1) suppression or prevention offormation, (2) reversal of crosslinks already present on proteins, and (3) inhibition or blockade of the biologic effects of AGEs. This paper will provide a brief review of the literature supporting each of these approaches, and will focus on a newly defined mechanism for accelerated AGE formation and toxicity in ESRD. This novel mechanism, involving redox-active metal binding to proteins, may provide the basis for a unique and simple approach to pharmacologic modulation of AGE effects in ESRD.

Biomimetic Model Studies Reveal the Role of the Ca Ion in Photosystem II Redox-inactive metal ions play crucial roles in tuning the reactivity of oxygen-containing metal complexes and metalloenzymes such as the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) in photosystem II (PSII)

Redox-inactive metal ions play crucial roles in tuning the reactivity of oxygen-containing metal complexes and metalloenzymes such as the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) in photosystem II (PSII) and its small-molecule mimics. In PSII, a Ca ion is part of the tetrameric Mn cluster, Mn4CaO5, and is integral to the water oxidation catalysis and evolution of oxygen by the OEC. Several different funct...

Exploiting redox activity in metal-organic frameworks: concepts, trends and perspectives.

Of the many thousands of new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that are now discovered each year, many possess potential redox activity arising from the constituent metal ions and/or organic ligands, or the guest molecules located within their porous structures. Those redox states that can be accessed via postsynthetic redox modulation often possess distinct physical properties; if harnessed, the...
